History - Robertstown Bowling Club - 1950 "How it all began" |
|
| Lawn Bowling was something new to most men of the district,
very few had any interest in the sport at all; hesitancy and suspicion were
plainly evident when Jim Armstrong, Tom Farley, Jack Roberts and Bert
Ruediger endeavoured to gather support for a meeting; a demonstration of
bowling was tried at a "Fancy Dress Ball" and finally a meeting was called
for 19th April 1950. 3 women and 9 men attended, the women because a croquet lawn was mentioned, but numbers were not sufficient for business, however one good thing came out of it; Mr David Farley offered to donate sufficient land next to the Tennis Courts for Bowling and Croquet Lawns. An Inaugural meeting took place on 26th June 1950 with Jack Roberts as chairman and information was read from other clubs and discussed. The meeting resolved that a "BOWLING CLUB" be formed and a Executive Committee was formed. Messrs W Voysey (President) D Farley (Patron) T Farley (Vice-President) F Stanton (Treasurer) B H Ruediger (Secretary) with J Armstrong, A L Mosey, W H Pfitzner & G Rowell were also elected to be on the committee. "Foundation Members' Fees" were Two Guineas and "Subscription" Three Guineas. Promissory Notes of Five Pounds were issued for 5, 7 & 10 years. Mr Rowell (Sen.) father of the School Headmaster and Mr West from the Lockleys Club assisted with the "Constitution" and procuring couch grass from the banks of the River Torrens was planted for 5 rinks and the Croquet ground in late spring 1950. Further important information, with "Highlights" to come. |
