Orders
extends lead in SA Rally Championship
Will
Orders has won the 2004 VELO Seats Walky 500 Robertstown rally held on Saturday
with an aggressive but controlled drive in perfect weather conditions. The
Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 1 performed faultlessly throughout the demanding 102
competitive kilometres using an ex Tommi Makinen engine to full advantage to
take the win by one minute 31 seconds. 21-year old Orders takes a 45-point
championship lead over contender Roman Watkins who failed to finish after an off
road excursion resulted in suspension failure.
Mitsubishi
driving South Australians Declan Dwyer and second place getter Steve Winwood
took the charge right up to the Victorian winner however the Worlds End creek
was to claim its first victim as Dwyer split a Turbo Intercooler hose costing
him an unrecoverable four minutes. Dwyer was ecstatic to be matching times with
the highly rated interstate crew and was looking a chance for an upset win.
Third place went to local Mark Povey after a faultless run in his Subaru WRX Sti.
Two
wheel drive honors and eighth outright went to Broken Hill’s Brett Baldwin
moving him to 5th outright in the SA Rally Championship. His aging
Datsun 240K absorbed the punishment delivered by the roads around Robertstown
delivering a slim 16 second lead over Mick Baldwin in an exciting father-son
battle.
Of
the 28 starters, 20 finished the event with the most spectacular retirement
undoubtedly being that of Boyd Symonds who “end-over-ended” his Falcon over
a fence in the Inspiration Point area. “I’ve had worse in speedway”
commented the Broken Hill resident as First Aid medics attended to him.
The
event was considered a resounding success by all involved and a fitting
celebration of the Walkerville All Cars Club 50th anniversary. Crews
now look forward to the Coopers Pale Ale Rally SA to be held on 31st
July/1st August, round four of the SA Rally Championship and
Globalstar Australian Rally Championship.
